Our story
The In the Daylight story began in 2015 when Jess left her job as an in-house graphic designer for a boutique stationery store. She had always loved paper goods and as a child remembers pouring over notepads and journals at the local news agent in the small country town where she grew up.
With both interior design and graphic design degrees under her belt, stationery wasn’t a path she consciously decided to follow, but Jess’ love of beautiful notebooks, greeting cards and paper goods seemed to lead her on this creative journey. Already working in the industry, Jess was inspired to create her own brand and share her illustrations with the world. After 6 months of hard work illustrating, designing and planning (from a co-working space in Brisbane) In the Daylight was born!
After taking the leap and launching via an Etsy store and Instagram page, Jess remembers the impact of receiving her first ever order; “My very first order was from this really gorgeous shop in Canberra (where we used to live). I remember Rick came to the studio and sat with me as we packed it up. It wasn’t planned, he was just on his way home from work, but it was so nice because it was actually this big momentous thing for our business”
Jess’ passion was to develop unique product designs, manufacture locally (and with exceptional attention to detail), and bring joy to her customers through the celebration of small moments to create lifelong memories – and all this has been brought to life through the In the Daylight product range you see today!
Working with the right retailers to stock their range was a very important step in setting up the brand. Finding stores that matched their style and philosophy is a continuing adventure with so many hidden gems throughout Australia. Rick and Jess consider it an honour to work with beautiful stores and have their products sit alongside other bespoke brands in giftware, textiles and stationery.
In an evolution for the brand, Rick then found his passion in woodworking when he built a custom In the Daylight stall for a local market. He had always been handy but had never been into woodwork, so he decided to teach himself via the miracle of YouTube! The result? Minimalist and modern market stalls, exhibition stands and promotional displays for In the Daylight events. Now he not only handles the accounting and technology duties, but also is the craftsman behind all their timber products (magnetic print hangers and photo holders) as well as the branded display stands for their stockists.
In the Daylight loves that you have decided to support them as a local business, and they love doing the same! When you buy from them, you are also supporting a line of local creators, manufacturers and suppliers.
